About the Museum

The town as beautiful as Darjeeling, its tourist attractions that include museums are also no less wonderful. Situated at the premises of the Ghum/Ghoom Railway Station and at an altitude of 7,400ft., the Darjeeling Himalayan Railways Ghoom Museum is one of the three museums of Darjeeling Himalayan Railways. The museum is located right opposite the railway station and was established in the year 2000 to display the rich heritage and legacy of Darjeeling Himalayan Railways.

The walls of the railway station at Ghoom and other places such as Kurseong and Sukna are adorned with inscriptions that also indicate that the Darjeeling Railway Station has been accorded as the UNESCO World Heritage status. Upon entering the museum, you will be greeted with an open space and a lush-green well-manicured garden surrounding the museum edifice. For all the train paramours, this is an ideal place where you can have a good amount of insight about the legendary toy train and get a closer look at Baby Sivok’s engine, the oldest toy train engine of Darjeeling Himalayan Railways which started operating in 1881, offering the first ever railway connection through the mountains.

The museum is quite small but gives you a glimpse of the Darjeeling railways from its construction phase to the present times through an impressive collection of historical artifacts. The museum also showcases many items on display that were donated by the ex-DHR employees and several pictures of the Toy Train. To know about the popular Darjeeling Himalayan Railway or about its legendary Toy Train can be very fascinating and the weather makes the experience even more pleasant, as mostly it is covered in fog and if it is clear, you can admire the lush green valley.
