History

The New Market was built during the rule of the British in India, in the late 19th century, when Kolkata (then called Calcutta) was the capital and the most important city in Indian subcontinent.

Lindsay Street was bought by the British as it was a great location in the city and commissioned Richard Roskell Bayne, an architect of the East Indian Railway Company, to design the New market here, in Victorian Gothic style to replace a small market that existed here at that time. It was bult and completed in 1873.
