rambagh Palace

Rambagh Palace is a palace-turned hotel in the city of Jaipur in the west Indian state of Rajasthan . It is spread across an area of around 47 acres, in the heart of the city surrounded by well-groomed gardens.

It is one of the earliest palaces in India to have turned into a hotel, following which various others (like Falaknuma Palace in Hyderabad , Lake Palace in Udaipur, etc.) were turned into hotels.

History

Rambagh Palace was originally built in 1835 A.D, when it was meant to be the living quarters for the wet nurse of Sawai Ram Singh II, the child of the royal family in Jaipur, who would later rule in Jaipur. At the time, it didn’t have the name Rambagh Palace.

It was refurbished in the following years, to be used as a guesthouse and hunting lodge for the royals, while Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh II went away to England to finish his studies. In the year 1925, after Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh II came back to Jaipur after finishing his higher studies in England, Rambagh Palace became his permanent residence. And it was then named after him as Rambagh Palace.

Some years post the king’s (and his family’s) reign, in the year 1972, the palace’s management was handed over to the well-known Taj Hotels group, after which it was turned into a luxury hotel with accommodation, dining and event facilities.

Architecture/Structure

The building was a simple structure when it was constructed as the nurse’s chamber in 1835. Later it was converted into a royal hunting lodge and guest house, as it was surrounded by thick forests and greenery, due to which it served as a great hunting location.

In the early 20th century, the premises of this royal lodge/guest house was expanded into a palace that was to be occupied by the Maharaja of Jaipur (Sawai Ram Singh II), with the designs and architecture being done by a talented architect Sir Samuel Swinton Jacob, who was chosen by the Maharaja. and eventually, beautiful lawns, gardens and pools were added to the royal palace after it was expanded into a larger building with the grandiose of a royal palace.

After Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh II occupied the palace, he got some more royal suites to it, around the year 1931.
